What to do & see in Iceland

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]When I think of Iceland I think of lovely colorful houses, amazing northern lights, hot springs and whale watching. This beautiful island is full of natural wonders and for sure a great holiday destination (and not just for layovers when you crossing the ocean). Having been living in Europe all my love, I am more and more thinking that I should explore more of the closer place rather than far away lands. Iceland has been on my watchlist for a spring trip for a long time; I keep my fingers crossed that I can tone down on my Sephora, DM & K-Beauty sprees to save up for an awesome week in Iceland.

I have been doing my research for a long time and here’s what I found to be the MUST see and do things in Iceland!

  1. The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of the main reasons I want to go to Iceland! This geothermal spa is so relaxing and very photogenic! The water can reach up to 39°C and can have so many benefits for the health and the skin! The spa has plenty of things to offer from in-water massages to tasting delicious food or even stay a couple of nights for a fully relaxing weekend.

  1. Northern Lights

So obviously, watching the northern lights is a must while in Iceland. Seeing the colorful lights playing and flickering in the sky above mountains and glaciers must be truly magical. The best time to see the northern lights is from October to March – you can always check the forecasts that predict visibility.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3934″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

  1. Whale Watching

Oh how cool would this be? Watch the whales in their natural habitat? Graciously swimming? It’s such a great opportunity and even if a whale watching tour can last for several hours, it’s something you really cannot miss.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3937″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

  1. Geysers

Because of the volcanic activities underneath the surface, there are a lot of geysers and thermal pools all around Iceland. I have never seen a geyser in real life, it is definitely an experience to see the hot stream shooting from the ground! One of the most popular geysers is Strokkur, in the southwest of Iceland.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3935″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

  1. South Coast

This region of Iceland is famous for the rich and diverse landscape. Here is where you can see spectacular waterfalls such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss. You can walk around, explore the nature and simply enjoy! From here, you can also spot Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that erupted in 2010.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3933″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]

  1. Glacier hiking

This sounds so exciting and definitely a must do in Iceland! You can take tours that will provide you with equipment and also receive a safety briefing. The views and the entire experience must be incredible! Even though I am not the most sportive person and would probably struggle, I would be so happy afterwards that I went through with it!

  1. Ice caves

Ice caves are formed during winter in the glaciers, by water running through or under the glacier, with new caves being formed every year. The most famous glacier for ice caves is Skaftafell in the Vatnajökull National Park, one of the largest national parks in Europe.

  1. Volcano Tour

Did you know you can descend into a volcano? Yes you can! Iceland is the only place in the world where you can descent into the magma chamber of a dormant volcano! Once you get there, you will be equipped with a helmet and a harness and slowly descend with a lift into the magma chamber. The most recent eruption took place over 4000 years go which gave the rocks the stunning color. Once you are on the ground of the volcano, after a journey of 198 m, you are left to explore the sheer beauty.

  1. Take a cooking class

Have you ever wondered about Icelandic cuisine I have never taken a cooking class but I would definitely give it a try ! You are not only cooking food, but also learning more about the country’s traditions and you get to hang out with locals.

If you don’t have a lot of holiday time, you can take advantage of the ice cave tours and lava trips in Iceland. That way you are sure to see the highlights of Iceland!

Iceland might seem like a small country but it is so extremely rich in natural wonders. Where else in the world can you gather together so many unique sights to see such as the northern lights and unforgettable experiences such as going inside a volcano?

Iceland sure sounds and looks like a great trip abroad. I have heard that Iceland is not a cheap holiday, but seeing all this beauty makes it all worth it!

Have you been to Iceland? If so, what did you love best? If not, would you give it a try?

  1. Iceland has always been on my bucket list. I’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights. And now, I’ll have to add glacier hiking and the Blue Lagoon to my list. Due to corporate travel policy, I haven’t been to as many diverse places that I’d like to. When I get the chance, I’m going to Iceland. Thanks for the great list!
