Human hair wigs are great for people who want an ultra-realistic look. While they are significantly more expensive than synthetics wigs, human hair lace front wigs and full lace wigs can be styled, colored, and trimmed. If properly maintained, these wigs can last for years. If you are contemplating buying your first wig, or just bought one, then this post is definitely for you. Check out these 7 wig care tips for delicate human hair wigs.
Wash the Wig at Right Intervals: Frequent washing can really take its toll. This is why when it comes to washing your expensive human hair lace front wigs, less is actually more. We recommend washing the wig when it’s visibly dirty. If you wear the wig outside every day, you can get away with washing the wigs once every month.
Avoid Frequent Use of Heated Styling Tools: Heated styling tools damage natural hair. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why wigs made from real hair are also susceptible to heat damage. There are HD wigs (Heat Defiant wigs) that hold up to heated styling methods. However, if your wig is not labelled as an HD wig you should avoid using heated styling tools as much as possible.
Air Dry the Wigs: Do not try to speed up drying time by blow drying a human hair wig. The hot air depletes the fiber of all its moisture and leaves it dull and frizzy. After a wash, keep the wig in a well-ventilated room away from direct sunlight. Allow it to air dry. Therefore, if you plan to wear the wig to a special event, wash it and leave to dry for a few days in advance.
Use Non-Plastic Wide-Toothed Combs: Plastic combs often have sharp edges that cause hair to break. When you have a set number of hair strands to work with, you need to do everything in your power to reduce hair breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb with rounded teeth, preferably made from wood. This helps you detangle your wig without compromising the health of the strands.
Use Oil-Free Conditioners: You really don’t want your wig to have a sticky feel. This is why it’s best to stay clear of conditioners that use oil as their primary ingredient.
Buy a Wig Rack or a Foam Head: If you buy an expensive human hair wig then there is a good chance the wig store is going to pack in a foldable wire wig rack for free. If you don’t get one, make sure to order a rack separately. These racks are great for drying the wigs or simply storing them.
Keep Heated Tools Away from the Base of the Wigs: The base of the wig is especially susceptible to heat damage. It’s best to keep the heated styling tools from touching the base as they can cause permanent an irreparable damage. Maintain this even when you are styling an HD human hair wig.
